Final Sales Day + Art Walk Information

Last Wednesday wrapped up my final day in sales. Previously, I went on a ride-along but this week I shadowed three different sales reps in the office. One of the reps handled people who went directly to the UT to purchase ad space. Some people dropped by during my time with her and made purchases. I noticed that most of them handled multiple accounts. She also told me that being in sales was difficult sometimes. The UT has certain goals for the sales rep, and she said they can be hard to meet sometimes. For example, they are supposed to produce so many ad sales for all of the UTs different products.

I sat in on an interesting call with the next lady I shadowed. She was dealing with a difficult customer who wasn't treating her very well. I could tell she was a little flustered, but she handled the situation well. She said dealing with those kinds of people was the hardest part about her job and I can see why.

The third person I shadowed has worked for the UT for 22 years, so it was very interesting to hear about his experience. First, he said he enjoyed the excitement of the old days when everyone was running around trying to make deadlines. He loved the chaotic environment, and said it was exactly like it is depicted in the movies. He said that there is some remnants left over, but it has calmed down a lot. He also said when he first started at the UT, there was an active Labor Union. Although he was not a part of the union, he enjoyed its presence. He said when the union was in place he received a raise or promotion every year. This stopped about 15 years ago when the union was driven out. He said after that people rarely got promoted and the benefits were not nearly as good. He also said that there have been a lot of changes since the new owners have taken control, but it is too early to tell how it is going to work out.

Overall, I had a great time shadowing these three employees and learned a lot by just observing them. The one thing I noticed about everyone working in the UT is that everyone looks happy for the most part.

Today we discussed logistics for the Art Walk and each group was assigned a task. Group 4 was assigned to social media. They said they didn't have a plan in mind, but wanted us to come up with ideas so they can direct us from there. So far we discussed possibly teaming up with AS to help promote the event on social media as well as creating a facebook event. I noticed that the marketing group has some good ideas for promoting on campus, and that maybe some of our tasks will overlap. For example, we were also thinking of possibly trying to promote the event through The Vista by buying ad space. We should make sure and coordinate so we can be as effective as possible. Our group is going to try and meet before break to discuss some ideas. I am getting excited for the Art Walk, and I am looking forward to hearing about the other groups ideas.

Art Walk Update Meeting

Group 2 is in charge of the On-Campus marketing for the Mission Federal Art Walk. We brainstormed different channels that we could market to on campus - mainly through the kiosks, televisions, residence halls, greek life and possibly an article in the Vista. For the article in the Vista, they suggested that we create a press release to be submitted to one of the editors (since they usually only select events to write about that are directly campus related). I will create a press release that talks about our class' involvement with UT and how it all leads up to the art walk April 28-29.

Kristine, I will send you a separate email with a draft and possibly get your suggestions on how we can best optimize it to get picked up by the Vista.

Good luck team!

Hi group!

As you may know my team is in the sales department this week and I have done my second ride along yesterday but this time we had to observe people working inside the office so it was less exciting but interesting too. We spent 3 hours observing 3 different people making calls, trying to convince clients to chose their web site or their newspapers to put their ads on and we saw clients coming too to the human resources office. I think that we are going to change on monday and go in the content department and that it's going to be more work because during this week we didn't really have something to do except giving our impressions about what we have seen ! I don't know if one of your team have heard about the event of the end of April because I thought they were supposed to give us their final plan with all of our ideas combined and we haven't talk about it with them since our presentations..

Anyway I hope you're all having a good week ! Have a good week end !

Hi I am SO sorry for blogging so late! seriously went from UT to class to the library to work on a group project. I finally now am able to get to my own computer.

we were given monday off to work on your content project. I was able to finish my article over the weekend after I attended the Busker Festival at Seaport Village. I personally had a BLAST doing this. I had a different outlook doing into the festival knowing that I has certain moitives and tasks to complete such as tweet, take picture and be extra observant. I was able to act like a "news reporter" and talk to the performers who were more than happy to give insight about their experience especially after I told them I am writing an article about them. When we reviewed all of our events, I was so proud of everyone! There were so many amazing event people went to. I thought it was interesting how they told us they could tell by our tweets we were marketing students. Many of our tweets seemed like we were marketing the event and trying to draw and audience rather than report about an event which they were perfectly okay with!

overall I had a great time. I am excited to be able to present this experience at future job interviews.

content week 2

This week my team continued to work in the content group.  Last week our group learned about journalism and reporting and this week we put it into action!! Each of us had to choose an event to report on, while also tweeting and taking photos at the same time.  At first it was a bit difficult to multitask all of these things, but as the event went on it got easier to get information, as well as inform the public.  For my event, I went to the grand opening of the store, Graffiti Beach.  It is located in South Park and supports emerging designers and artists.  They decided to open this past weekend because there was an annual spring walkabout, which attracted a ton of attention to the new opened store.  Many of the designers in the store take an eco friendly approach, such as Beatrice Holiday, who supports riding bikes whenever possible, and makes all of her jewelry out of the inner tubes of bicycle tires.  There next event will be held on April 7th, so if any of you would like to check it out feel free to ask me any other questions :)  Hope you all had a great week!  I think my group moves to the marketing department next week… yayy!!

3/28 content

Hey everybody this this week was really fun. I had a great time going to the event and writing the article. i admit that the live tweeting was a little more difficult then i expected. i was told today during our presentations that me tweets were to factual and didn't show enough personality, which is true i tried to just report facts it didn't even occur to me that people would never follow a reporter that was not at least some what entertaining. I know that a couple of other people in the two content groups also express some difficulty in getting the hang of live tweeting. Over all every body did a great job on the presentations today, Keala did a awesome job on the video of the Filipino cultural clubs play.  All in all it was a great experience to learn about how journalism works in the modern era. I really enjoyed that they let us do some time in the content department, even thou we are all in business i felt that i learned a lot and it would of been a shame to intern at a news paper not knowing how to actually report. I'm excited to go to the marketing department next week and see how my years of learning in the class room stacks up to real life professional work.

Sales Section

This week was informal for our meeting times in the sales rotation. However, each of us will be working one on one with a sales professional. On Friday, I will be attending a multiple hour conference call discussing a sales event. The ride along did not work out with my sales person due to a scheduling conflict, but I am grateful for the opportunity to attend a "real life business conference." We will reconvene together as a group on Monday to talk about what we learned and the experiences we were fortunate enough to encounter. - I will update you guys after Friday!
